Gold Star Standards of Excellence

About the Program

The Maine Tobacco-Free College Network conducts the Gold Star Standards of Excellence recognition program annually to encourage and support Maine’s institutions of higher education that are addressing smoking and tobacco use by creating and maintaining smoke and tobacco-free policies.  Institutions of higher education are committed to providing as healthy and safe of an environment as possible for their students, faculty, staff and visitors.  We applaud and want to recognize these efforts.

All institutions of higher education are encouraged to apply annually. Schools that meet a minimum of six of the ten standards will be recognized with an award during a celebration event. Those institutions who have received awards in past years are encouraged to reapply for continued recognition and ongoing commitment to addressing smoking and tobacco use on campus.

New for 2018!

The Gold Star Standards of Excellence program recognizes Maine’s institutions of higher learning annually for creating and maintaining tobacco-free environments and supporting tobacco-free living.  New for 2018, we will be including Career & Trade Schools along with Colleges and Universities to apply for recognition!

The Gold Star Standards of Excellence programs (implemented annually for behavioral health, higher education and hospitals) are opportunities to engage with policy stakeholders in your community around the initiative and offering technical assistance on policy change.

The Tobacco Prevention Services Team will be sending out communications to stakeholders at all institutions of higher learning both via postcards and e-newsletters in January.
